Supermarket Tesco is inviting applications from charities to benefit from the £1.8 million that it expects to generate from carrier bag levies in Wales and Scotland.
Charities will need to explain how they could work with the company and use the money “to make a difference for the environment and their communities”.

Plastic carrier bag legislation

Plastic carrier bags have been charged for in Wales since 1 October 2011. Since then the RSPB has received over £2 million from the scheme.
Scotland is due to introduce similar legislation from October 2014.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for charities to partner with us and make a real difference to the communities they serve.
“The money raised from the bag levy in Wales has already been put to great use by the local RSPB, and we the expect successful bidders this time round will also use the money raised to make a huge difference. For the first time, charities in Scotland will have the chance to benefit from the bag levy too.”

The Scottish partnership is worth an expected £1 million and the Welsh partnership £800,000. Eligible UK charities can apply for one or both partnerships. Each will run for an initial 12 months from 1 October 2014 to 30 September 2015.
Tesco says that it is “looking to support a national charity across Scotland and/or Wales, with strong presence in local communities across the UK”. It must also support Tesco’s Scale for Good ambitions, focus on a cause with national resonance and appeal, and have the necessary infrastructure to deliver and communicate the partnership at local and national level.
Applications for Tesco’s carrier bag partnerships should be no longer than two A4 pages and must be submitted by 5pm on 11 July 2014.
