Planning Work Time Using Social Media

4 October, 2008 - 20:37
Beth Kanter offers a chart and some explanation of time spent on different levels of social media work.  Her post puts things in perspective and challenges me about what Randal and I are doing with our blog and what we are doing with the business. Wondering how much and how often our readers are using different social media tools? And really wondering how to listen, connect, share, learn, and engage fully and efficiently. And how to balance outreach, linkage, and getting projects done.

Help the Field Understand Online Asking

Seth Godin's Advice to Nonprofits

25 September, 2008 - 21:44
A half-hour audio lecture by new media guru,  Squidoo founder, thought leader, and remarkable His Purpleness Seth Godin geared directly and specifically to nonprofit folks. Most of us (nonprofits) are boring. Doing important work, he admits. But face it. BO-RING. He offers information and direction "to radically rethink what and how nonprofits do things." Fundraisers, we need to stop interrupting and shouting at people (Prospects) to ask for money and attention. Instead, we should "hand the megaphone to your believers." He says, "if you're trying to reach people, give them something to talk about and tools to use" to talk with each other. Think Kiva and threadless

23 September, 2008 - 15:35
The IRS redesigned the 990 for the first time in years. There are a number of  new schedules, including Schedule G, which is specifically about fundraising.  Here's an article that lays out what the change means.
Here's a podcast by an expert in direct mail who discusses the new form with Patricia Pasqual, Foundation Center director.  It's 20 minutes, so sit tight.

Flip Charts Stay With You

18 September, 2008 - 23:04

So I'm checking web sites for addresses and phone numbers and I discover an image of a flip chart (aka newsprint poster) created at a retreat ChangeMatters facilitated last Spring.  We asked participants to write on and around the most powerful and meaningful words in their mission statement to check what mattered most to them.  Funny to see it online.
In a meeting discussing a strategic planning project with a new client-partner just this morning, I found myself saying, "Yep, it's all about the flip charts."  Sometimes paper and markers is just the right form of communications technology.
