Christian Aid promotes Ctrl.Alt.Shift with comedy 'chugger' video

Submitted by howardlake on 12 September, 2008 - 15:52.

Ctrl.Alt.Shift, Christian Aid's attempt to create a "global community of proactive, outspoken agitators seeking change" using the web and social media, has published a humorous video on YouTube to promote the site.

It features Neg from Channel 4 comedy series "Balls Of Steel" as "the most annoying charity mugger ever".

The intention is that after watching his tireless exploits you ask yourself "How far would I go for charity?"

I don't think this is going to endear Christian Aid to the Institute of Fundraising or PFRA...

Are you sure it's a chugger?

How do we know this is a chugger? At no point does he ask for a direct debit. If you ask me, this is a prospector (aka two-step fundraiser), rather than a chugger.

Two-step fundraiser. It sounds like a dance.

No matter what your views of the video are...

...when you get to the www.ctrlaltshift.co.uk web site then confusion sets in!

Garish colours that I guess appeal to a generation other than my own(!) together with links that change as you are looking at them!

All a bit too busy for me and unclear what it is all about - I didn't stay there long!

As for the video it infers yet again that charity shops are there to drop things off at and not to buy from!! And that is not my perception rather than a comment from a charity that runs around 8 local shops with untrained volunteers.

Oh well, it was a bit of fun, it will probably appeal to someone, but will it achieve whatever the goals were/are?

Intelligent Giving's view on the video

Adam Rothwell at Intelligent Giving has added his comments on the video at Christian Aid: trying to be cool at chuggers' expense:

"I think this is rather funny – an effective satire on chuggers' annoying behaviour. As such, it’s guaranteed to cause a stir, and I think that’s an achievement in itself. But I’m worried about the video's underlying message."
