Twitter.co.uk benefits charities

The owner of the twitter.co.uk domain has found himself in a rather strong position given the popularity of the .com version of the name. And he is putting it to good use, based on the sudden rise in the number of people visiting his website expecting to find the microblogging tool there.

He is inviting people and organisations to advertise there by sponsoring one of the charity events listed there, and the income is donated to charity. All of the events listed have a Justgiving.com link so sponsors make the donation direct to the charity, rather than via twitter.co.uk.

"Every 20 seconds someone types in twitter.co.uk by mistake" he writes at the top of the page. It used to be every 24 seconds, but traffic continues to grow.

So far the site, registered in 2005, one year before Twitter.com was registered, has raised £349.16 for charity.
