Christian Aid adopts sensitive fundraising approach to mark September 11th anniversary
Christian Aid’s Afghanistan appeal marks the first anniversary of the attacks and demonstrates a sensitive approach.
Whether to link a fundraising appeal around the first anniversary of the September 11th 2001 disasters in America has exercised many UK charities. Some have ensured that regular appeals will not land on doorsteps tomorrow morning, and others have chosen not to hold fundraising events on the day.
Some, like Christian Aid, are running related appeals and have not shied away from marking the anniversary. Getting the tone right is essential, and Christian Aid does this well for its Afghanistan appeal. Visitors to its Web site encounter a pop-up box asking them “A year on from September 11, what have the past 12 months brought for you?” The charity expands the question to embrace all those issues which it works to alleviate: “For much of the world it’s meant another year of war, famine, injustice and hardship.”

The charity’s Web site also includes a feature article marking the anniversary and updating supporters on Christian Aid’s work in Afghanistan. “September 11 has been flagged up as the day the world changed,” says the charity. “It may well be so for many people but for the poorest in Afghanistan, life is as tough as ever.”
