Sir Adrian Cadbury and Jon Snow endorse The Big Give

Sir Adrian Cadbury and Jon Snow are the latest high-profile names to support the major gift website The Big Give.

Cadbury, former chair of Cadbury Schweppes, and Snow, the Channel 4 journalist, have joined thirty eminent philanthropists in endorsing
theBigGive.org.uk as a tool to help wealthy donors to find charitable projects in their area of interest. The site lets charities list fundraising projects that seek from £5,000 to £10 million.

Other high-profile names to pledge support include Martha Lane-Fox, founder of lastminute.com; Frank Field, Labour MP; and Michael Spencer, CEO of ICAP.

Feedback to The Big Give suggests that the site has struck a chord with major donors because of the anonymity it provides as well as the wide variety of projects available to browse.

Recent changes to the site, launched in October 2007, include an enhanced search function that allows donors to shortlist projects by keyword and also search through the 4,400 charities on the site. These charities are currently listing 3,650 projects seeking a total of £1.5 billion.

Alec Reed CBE, founder of the site and himself an active philanthropist said: "We want to make The Big Give the first step for any donor looking to give intelligently. Our thirty-strong Board of Philanthropists helps us tailor the site
to let donors find new charities and projects more effectively."

The Big Give works

I met a charity yesterday that had received £10,000 as a result of posting a project on The Big Give, so it does work. It had taken the staff member at least 30 minutes to publish the details of the project on the site. A good investment of time in my view.

Admittedly she had requested a higher fee, but she did comment that the donor now looked like getting more closely involved with the charity.
