World Porridge Day supports Mary's Meals

The first World Porridge Day took place yesterday to celebrate the traditional Scottish dish that is eaten all around the world, and to raise funds for the charity Mary's Meals.

World Porridge Day was established by the organisers of the 16th World Porridge Making Championship, which took place on the same day in Carrbridge in the Highlands.

Supporters across the UK were encouraged to hold porridge-linked fundraising events.

One of Mary's Meals' projects is providing Likuni Phala, a nutrient-rich maize-based porridge, to 320,000 children in Malawi, over 10 per cent of the primary school population.

Abeer Macintyre, Mary’s Meals lead fundraiser, said: "We are thrilled to be joining porridge enthusiasts around the world in the first World Porridge Day, and would like to thank the community of Carrbridge for inviting Mary’s Meals to be involved.

"We share the affection that many people here feel for porridge in its traditional Scottish form, and we know its value overseas too – as it is a staple food for over 320,000 children at our projects in Malawi."
