Phyllida Law records BBC Radio 4 appeal for Fight for Sight

Actress Phyllida Law is fronting a BBC Radio 4 appeal on behalf of eye research charity Fight for Sight, urging people to support the research being carried out into ways of detecting glaucoma at an earlier stage.

A family history of the condition encouraged Law to undergo tests and her glaucoma was detected early enough to receive treatment to manage the condition. She is now concerned her daughters, Sophie and Emma Thompson, and their children will be affected.

Law said: "My mother had no idea that this was something that could have been prevented if she’d received earlier treatment. She was in her 80s by the time she was diagnosed so a lot of the damage was already done.

"I've been lucky because my glaucoma was caught early but I’m very conscious this could run through my whole family. Research happening now could not only improve treatments for me but could also save the sight of my children and grandchildren."

The appeal will be broadcast on BBC Radio 4 on 19 December at 7.55am and 9.26pm, and again on Thursday 23 December at 3.27pm.
