Fly the virtual ORBIS hospital plane on World Sight Day

Sight charity ORBIS is marking World Sight Day today with a data-capture tool that lets the public fly a virtual version of the charity’s Flying Eye Hospital aircraft and learn about the work that it understakes tackling preventable blindness worldwide.
Operation Sight Flight has been created with help from fundraising and campaigning communication specialists The Good Agency. The tool is designed to help boost ORBIS’s profile and capture data. It also includes a call to donate, offering single or regular donations.
Each user who registers gets to navigate the virtual aircraft 300 miles of the 500,000 mile target journey.
Operation Sight Flight went live at the beginning of this week and is being promoted by Facebook adverts as well as ORBIS UK’s own social media accounts.
Krishani Ranaweera, Head of Communications ORBIS EMEA, said that World Sight Day gave them a good opportunity “to build an innovative app that enables people to get involved with our work quickly and easily”.
Charlotte Beckett, Head of Digital at The Good Agency added: “The work that the ORBIS Flying Eye Hospital does globally gave us a unique opportunity to build an interactive piece of data visualisation. All the flight paths are built from the plane’s own data sets, and the content has been developed from the crew’s location reports. We hope users will have as much fun flying the plane and looking around the map as we did developing it.”
