Variety Ambassador Duncan Goodhew honoured in train-naming ceremony

Olympic swimmer and children's charity Variety's Ambassador Duncan Goodhew has been honoured by train company Southeastern by having a train named after him. His name now appears on a high speed Javelin train, one of several which have been named after Britain's fastest athletes.

To celebrate the latest train naming, Southeastern chartered a special service for Goodhew and 300 young children from Homeleigh School, in East London, one of hundreds of special needs schools that Variety supports.

Duncan Goodhew said he was pleased to share this special day with children supported by Variety. He said: "This is a tremendous honour. I never in my wildest dreams expected to have my name emblazoned on the side of a high speed Javelin train, so this is an absolute thrill. Variety creates positive experiences for young disabled and disadvantaged children so this was a great event to which we could invite the pupils from Homeleigh School."

Laurence Davis, Chief Barker of Variety, said: “We are thrilled that Southeastern is rewarding Duncan for all his hard work in both sport and charity endeavours.  His continued support for the children who we help is a great inspiration to us all and seeing his name on a train will be a constant reminder of that."

Other athletes that have Javelin trains named after them include Dame Kelly Holmes, Lord Sebastian Coe, Sir Steve Redgrave, Baroness Tanni Grey Thompson, Daily Thompson, Dame Sarah Storey, Mo Farah, Jessica Ennis, Ellie Simmonds, Jonnie Peacock, and Victoria Pendleton.
