Sightsavers to receive $800k grant provided they can match it

Sightsavers International, Inc has been awarded a grant of $880,000 from the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation to assist the government of Mali achieve the elimination of trachoma by 2015.

As part of the grant agreement, Sightsavers will have to raise additional funds and match the Foundation's grant dollar for dollar.

The work will focus on addressing the backlog of trichiasis trachomatous (TT) cases – where eyelashes have turned in and rub on the eyeball, requiring urgent surgery to prevent blindness.

The Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, created in 1944 by the hotel chain founder and businessman, has traditionally supported Helen Keller International (HKI) and the Carter Centre (TCC) in Mali. Sightsavers International will be working with them as part of the project.

Dr. Shaheen Kassim-Lakha, Director, International Programs at the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, said: "Sightsavers is a welcome addition to our partnership in West Africa that is working hard to meet the Vision 2020 target of eliminating trachoma in Mali."
