Barclays Pingit app adds Gift Aid functionality

Pingit, Barclays' person to person (P2P) mobile app, has added a 'donate with Gift Aid' function. People using the app to make donations to charity can now ensure they do so tax-effectively.
Launched in February 2012, the tool lets anyone in the UK with a mobile phone send an instant payment to another individual or organisation without needing to exchange bank details.
Pingit users can donate to charity by scanning QR codes on the charity's marketing materials, or by selecting their charity from the app's business directory.

Barclays explains that "when making a donation using the Barclays Pingit app, we'll show you an estimate of the amount the charity will claim on your donation. Fractions of a penny will be rounded down to the nearest whole penny."
David McHattie, head of charities, corporate banking, Barclays, said: "As [charities] explore new and innovative ways in which to engage and broaden their donor base, and in particular appeal to the next generation donor, Pingit could prove to be a key element in their evolving armoury.”
Macmillan Cancer Support, Dogs Trust and Charities Trust are some of the charities to make use of this new functionality. Macmillan used the app last year, before its Gift Aid function was added, for its World's Biggest Coffee Morning event.
The Barclays Pingit app can be downloaded for free and is available on iPhone, Android and Blackberry. Both Barclays and non-Barclays current account customers can use the app.
