Lesley James, Vice Chair of I CAN, the charity which helps children with speech and language difficulties, has become a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the 2003 New Year Honours.

Just Help wins 1999 BT eBusiness Innovation Award

Charity Just Help has won the BT eBusiness Innovation Award for its use of the Web to support its work with Kosovan refugees.

The appeal was set up over the 1999 Easter weekend. The Web site and e-mail news list helped the charity communicate wth 400 people in five countries to raise funds and recruit volunteers.

MSF wins Nobel Peace Prize

Medecins Sans Frontieres has won the 1999 Nobel Peace Prize, the first humanitarian agency to win the prize since UNICEF in 1981. Read the BBC's coverage.

Government beats charities in Web award

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office Web site scooped the award for Best Government/Charity site from the online magazine New Media Age.

It is the most visited of all UK government sites, providing "the equivalent of 60,000 hours of customer service based on a time-cost of 4,000 person hours," according to The Guardian Online. The site is run by two and a half staff.

Two-star [** - recommended] rating from Britannica Internet guide

UK Fundraising has earned a rating of two out of five stars ("recommended") at the Britannica Internet guide. This might not sound impressive, but it's the (equal) highest ranking for any fundraising-related site.

Simply getting included and reviewed for the site is something of an achievement. Three stars seems to be the preserve of the major media and established publishers' sites.

Scottish fundraising awards

Innovative and successful Scottish fundraisers were honoured on 8th October at the Scottish Fundraising Awards ceremony in Glasgow.
