Mixed response to Home Office plans from Charity Finance Directors' Group

The Charity Finance Directors' Group (CFDG) today gave a mixed response to Home Office proposals for new regulations on how charities undertake public collections.

As a member of the Charities Bill Coalition, CFDG has been campaigning for the implementation of Home Office recommendations on charity reform published earlier this year.

The Charity Finance Directors' Group has launched a range of proposals for consultation that they hope will improve the quality and consistency of charity annual reports.

The CFDG's aim is to improve charity reporting so the public will know exactly how their money is being spent.

Old-style £5 notes no longer legal tender from 21 November

The £5 notes with an image of George Stephenson on the reverse will cease to be legal tender after 21 November 2003.

The notes will therefore not be of much use to charities if dropped into a collecting tin. Museums, cathedrals and any charity with static collecting boxes should examine them soon to check if there are any of these old £5 notes inside.

Collaborative sourcing service Exchange CS is allowing non-profit groups to make online price checks or quote requests to a large number of suppliers.

New name for CafCash

CafCash Ltd, the banking subsidiary of Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) is to
be renamed CAF BANK on 10 November 2003, in response to feedback from new customer research.

Peter Mitchell, CAF's Head of Banking Services, believes that the new name will better reflect its status as a bank that provides services exclusively to charities and non-profit organisations.

The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales ('ICAEW') has joined forces with The Giving Campaign to urge chartered accountants to advise their clients on tax-effective ways of giving to charity.

Charity Commission releases dormant money for local charities

Money in dormant bank accounts has been donated to charities in Bristol and South Gloucestershire by the Charity Commission.

Following a successful pilot project to find money held in dormant charity accounts and
release it to local charities, the Charity Commission has distributed £20,000.
