A special fundraising service in a Bradford church has raised £600,000 in two hours. One third was given in cash and the remainder pledged from sales of shares, cars, jewellery and other valuables.
The Independent on Sunday newspaper began a campaign on 8th February "to stop the rot in the arts." In particular they are campaigning "for a change in taxation policy which would permit individuals to make simple tax-free contributions to theatres, orchestras, museums and galleries". The newspaper feels that the UK government could learn from the US Internal Revenue Service.
Fundraising events can sometimes go tragically wrong. In New Jersey (USA), for example, in October 1997 a young boy was murdered while out fundraising from house to house.
