London marathon runners raise more on JustGiving

Independent analysis has confirmed the gap in fundraising performance between JustGiving and Virgin Money Giving.
Dr Catarina Figuera, Director of Executive MBA Programme and Senior Lecturer in Applied Economics at Cranfield School of Management, has analysed the online fundraising results achieved by London marathon runners on JustGiving and Virgin Money Giving in 2010. The data for the study was provided by JustGiving member charities which also used Virgin Money Giving.
The study confirmed that these fundraisers raised significantly more on JustGiving than on Virgin Money’s fundraising platform Virgin Money Giving.
Dr Catarina Figueira said: “The statistical analysis carried out on a sample of over 500 fundraising pages from two leading charities showed that there was a significant difference between the amounts raised by fundraisers on JustGiving and Virgin Money Giving. Essentially, the results showed that fundraisers raised more on JustGiving. On JustGiving, the page average was £1,173 and on Virgin Money Giving, the page average was £714, which is a difference of just over 60%.”
Anne-Marie Huby, MD at JustGiving said: “This research confirms the day-to-day experience of our charity members. When their supporters use JustGiving they raise consistently more, because of our continued investment in usability and new fundraising tools such as our smart phone apps and close integration with Facebook. We are 100% dedicated to helping them raise more online and it makes a huge difference to our charities’ bottom line.
JustGiving will conduct further comparative analyses and update the sector later in the year.

About Catarina Figuera, Director of Executive MBA Programme and Senior Lecturer in Applied Economics at Cranfield School of Management:
Dr Catarina Figueira is Director of Executive MBA Programme and Senior Lecturer in Applied Economics at Cranfield School of Management. Her research interests lie in the area of financial modelling, particularly related to international financial integration, efficiency and regulation and housing markets. Catarina has published in leading international journals and is a frequent contributor to a wide range of international conferences.
About the methodology:
The statistical analysis involved two steps. The first was an F-test to determine whether the variances of the two samples were unequal and in-turn determine which two-sample (independent group) t-test would be performed. The F-test indicated that the variances where un-equal and therefore a T-test that assumes un-equal variance was used.
