A record breaking number of entries for the National Awards this year didn't make the judges' job any easier choosing winners.

The 1,223 people named today in the 2013 New Year Honours List include many who have "undertaken outstanding work in their communities either in a voluntary or paid capacity".

I've been lucky enough to sit on three judging panels this year for charity awards. And I've been a judge several times over the past few years.

How would you define philanthropy? My suggestion would be supporting others by donating to good causes. Now think how you would pitch that concept to a teenager or young adult?

It's that awards time of year again. Well, the awards will be presented at the National Convention on 2 July, but meanwhile, here are the shortlisted entries. 

Digital culture and technology news site Mashable has announced the winners of its 5th annual Mashable Awards and as usual there are several nonprofit organisations and campaigns amongst them.
